ROXAS CITY, Capiz, Oct. 6 (PIA6) – Broadcast practitioners in Capiz are set to hold a mangrove planting activity here on October 13, Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas-Capiz Chapter President Ely Abarra said.
Abarra said that the activity dubbed as KBP-DILG Broadcastreeing Project 2012 is a partnership effort of the Department of the Interior and Local Government and the local government units and other national government agencies.
He said that the project, which will be done by KBP Chapters nationwide, aims to advocate and encourage wider involvement and participation in tree planting activities that will help in mitigating the adverse effects of global warming and climate change on humanity and the environment.
Abarra said that this will be the second year already where the KBP-Capiz Chapter will be holding the mangrove planting at the Cadimahan River in Roxas city.
Last year, they were able to plant nearly 3,000 mangrove propagules, he said, adding that they are happy for the positive support of the different broadcast stations in Capiz as well as of the LGUS and volunteer groups by their participation during the event.
“This year we will be planting 2,000 mangrove propagules,” Abarra said, pointing out that through such activity, the same will serve as river and fish sanctuary protection and the group’s contribution to the National Greening Program of the government.
Early this year, former DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo issued Memorandum Circular No. 2012-132 directed to the provincial governors, city and municipal mayors, punong barangays, DILG regional directors and field officers and other concerned agencies to perform their assigned tasks to ensure the conduct of the KBP-DILG Boradcastreeing Project this year.
The project is likewise in line with the Memorandum of Agreement between the KBP and the DILG dated April 27,2011.
In 2010, President Benigno S. Aquino III issued Executive Order No. 26 ordering and declaring the implementation of the National Greening Program as a government priority.
The program, which aspires to plant 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares land from 2011 to 2016, aims to attain sustainable human development and economic and ecological security. (JCM/Jemin B. Guillermo/PIA6-Capiz)
