Maritime week celebration gives tribute to seafarers

ROXAS CITY, Capiz, Sept. 19 (PIA6) – The Philippine Coast Guard is all set for the National Maritime week celebration in Capiz.

Acting Roxas City Coast Guard Station Commander Jimmy Oliver Vingno disclosed that all activities are in place for the said celebration which will run from September 24 until 28 here.

He said that the PCG will spearhead the different activities here in partnership with the different national agencies, private and civic groups, academe, local government units, including the shipping firms.

Vingno revealed that the celebration, which is anchored on the theme “IMO: One Hundred Years after Titanic,” is a tribute to all the seafarers or seamen who are considered as among the country’s heroes.

He said that the celebration also highlights on the safety of seafarers, passengers and ships to prevent maritime incidents.

This year’s celebration will kick off with a mass aboard M/V Super Shuttle RoRo 2 in the morning of September 24 which will be followed by a motorcade from Culasi Port to Gaisano City mall and the opening of the photo exhibit in the same mall, he stressed.

Vingno said that other activities include the conduct of coastal clean-up at Baybay Beach as well as friendship games on September 26, and mangrove planting at Cadimahan River on September 28.

“More than 500 propagules of mangrove are expected to be planted in the area assigned by the Roxas City government for the PCG,” Vingno said, pointing out that the mangrove planting will be joined by the Roxas City Sangguniang Kabataan federation, maritime students of Colegio dela Purisima Concepcion, private groups and representatives from the different national and local government agencies.

On the other hand, he urges the public to be more aware of their responsibilities in order to prevent untoward maritime incidents and accidents. (JCM/JBG/PIA6-Capiz)
